What are the limits on a free server?

Servers, memory, storage, players, backups — every number on the Cobbly free tier, and what is not capped.

The free tier has fixed limits so that everyone sharing the hardware gets a usable server. Here is every one of them.

The numbers

  • 2 servers per account.
  • 3 GB of RAM per server. Fixed — there is no slider.
  • 10 GB of storage per server. You get an email as you pass 8 GB.
  • Up to 10 players online at once.
  • 3 backup slots per server, kept for 30 days.
  • 5 people can be granted panel access per server, from the Access tab.
  • 5 outbound webhooks per server.

Storage — what counts

Your storage figure is the world, anything you upload in the file manager, installed mods or a modpack, and your backups. You can see the current total under Resources on the server page. When a server is full, world growth and further uploads are blocked until you free space — deleting old backups is usually the quickest way.

Memory is fixed at 3 GB

Every free server gets exactly 3 GB and it cannot be raised on the free tier. That runs Vanilla, Paper and smaller modpacks comfortably; the biggest 150-mod packs need more than 3 GB and will not fit. How much RAM does a Minecraft server need? breaks down what uses it.

Capped settings

View distance and simulation distance are capped below the Minecraft defaults. They have the largest effect of any setting on a shared machine, and leaving them open would make every server on that hardware worse. Everything else in server.properties is yours to change.

Sleep is not optional

A free server stops after 5 idle minutes and hands its slot back — that wait is fixed, not something you can change. There is no “never”: a server that never sleeps would hold a slot other people are queueing for. See Why does my server go to sleep?.

What is not limited

  • Every current Minecraft version, including the latest.
  • Every loader — Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, Folia — plus one-click CurseForge modpacks.
  • The full control panel: live console, file manager, server.properties editor, players and whitelist, world upload and download, automatic backups.
  • How many worlds you cycle through, and how many players you whitelist.

When you need more

If the memory or storage ceiling is the problem, the panel clones your world and settings into a paid Spawnly server — more memory, more storage, no sleeping — in one click. Your free server keeps running, so the move is reversible. New here? Start with How to make a free Minecraft server.
